I resisted writing about metal for over a month now, waiting until I could come across something that metal heads (a very discriminating crowd, if you didn’t know) could sink their teeth into. Fans of the genre will be pleased with Altered Symmetry, a highly technical outfit that takes its cues from Rush and Dream Theater as much as Metallica and Megadeth. Like all good metal bands, there is little fluff here, just lots of airtight guitar shred complimented by over the top, Iron-Maiden wannabe vocals and jackhammer double-bass pedal kicks. And like any metal band worth its salt, Altered Symmetry has their own concept album, 2011's “Prologue,” which features songs inspired by great short stories in literature, including works by Poe and Chekhov.

This is the first full album from Colombian Progressive Rock band, ALTERED SYMMETRY. They’ve released EPs in the past with cover songs and shorter albums, so it’s good to see a CD full of their own material. And if “Prologue” is anything to go by, they’ve got a bright future to look forward to, because this effort is superb.
They cite their influences from bands such as QUEENSRYCHE, DREAM THEATER, and METALLICA, and it certainly shows. It’s almost like they’ve taken the best bits from all of these bands, and mixed them together which has resulted in a sound completely of their own. Whilst not one of the fastest Progressive albums I’ve heard, it still has a good tempo, and they mix things up a little bit by having acoustic bits in there, including the song “A Day That Changed All”, which is beautiful. The lyrics definitely deserve a mention here – with tracks based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens, the boys have definitely done their homework, and it results in songs that have an extra depth to them. I think that my favorite track is the first one, “Life Sentence”, which is pretty melodic and Proggy.
And so to the band members themselves. Gomez’s vocals are perfectly suited to the music, bringing the lyrics to life with his delivery, and taking you through the epic journey of the album. The bass and guitar playing from Cadena and Martinez is just awesome. The solos take your breath away, and they really add so much to the songs rather than feeling like they’ve been added in as an afterthought. The whole band comes together very nicely to produce something not quite like anything I’ve heard before.
I certainly look forward to hearing more from this band, that’s for certain, and I think they could go far if any future releases are up to this standard. But even if you’re not a fan of Prog, you should not get put off this release by the genre, because it’s an incredibly accessible album.

Hailing out of Bogota, Columbia, progressive metalists, Altered Symmetry have delivered their new Cd "Prologue". The album touches on the power metal scene as well by paying homage to bands such as Iron maiden, Queensryche, and Dream Theater. Filled with complex story-telling, Altered Symmetry supplies plenty of atmosphere with their music and lyrics but it's hard to not notice where Arley Gomez's vocals are limited or strained when he tries to hit some of the higher notes though he does a good job delivering them with tremendous passion.
"Justified Crime" is one of my favorite tracks where Arley stays within his vocal and range and sounds fantastic. He's supported with skilled musicanship supplied by Miguel Martinez on guitars and Julian Camilo on bass. "Dream of Tomorrow" is another great track with Miguel coming in with a strong guitar lead and and Arley delivering some very melodic and powerful singing.
"Long Lost Love" is a great ballad that has Arley going between low growls and cleaner vocals along the lines of James Labrie and sounds like it could have been pulled out of the mid or late eighties. Classic power metal right there. "When No One Cares" is definitely one of Altered Symmetry's harder tracks with a fantastic solo from Miguel.
"Lies and Fairytales" is one of the longest tracks on here that jumps from power metal to almost spacy, acoustic rock in the middle before dives right back into shredding guitar riffs and atmospheric vocals. This is definitely one of the most creative efforts on here.
There's alot of room for Altered Symmetry to grow but this album shows how much potential these guys have and it can only get better from here. If you're fans of the progressive metal scene then you'll definitely want to check out "Prologue"!

The broader canvas of Altered Symmetry's music is progressive metal, with notes of and nods to traditional heavy and power metal. Their influences have been Rush, Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Metallica among others, so expect some clever arrangements and skillful musicianship. To lyrical content, though not uncommon among the more 'thinking man's' prog, Altered Symmetry looks more to literature, penning songs inspired by Dickens, Herman Hesse, Anton Chekov, Poe, and Michael Ende, author of the Neverending Story. Again, this things should encourage more than a little interest, and it's well worth it.
At times Altered Symmetry can be quite heavy, even quick in moments, as on Slave Without a Master or Walker. Then they'll surprise you with the acoustic guitar driven A Day that Changed All, which has a near lullaby feel to its composure. This song also speaks to the fine guitar work of Miguel Martinez that is rather impressive throughout. Another interesting switch is the more melodic and progressive rock of the opening track, Life Sentence. But, of course, when taking cues from the likes of Queensryche and Dream Theater, you need to be both intricate and somewhat epic in your composition; you'll find this in The Longest Journey and Lies and Fairy Tales. In the end, there's much to enjoy here with the expectation that the songs are both diverse and interesting. Perhaps my only dilemma was with Arley Gomez's vocals which neither captured my interest or necessarily pleased my ears, except in lighter moments like within Long Lost Love or in the acoustic arrangement of A Day That Changed All. But, this observation should not discourage anyone from checking out and enjoying this fine album.
Prologue demonstrates Altered Symmetry's exceptional skill and inevitable promise in the progressive metal field. Even greater things lie ahead.

Altered Symmetry is a progressive metal band from Bogota, Colombia; the band was founded on 2006 by Miguel Martinez and Julian Cadena. After releasing a couple of EP’s the band is now releasing a full length album called “Prologue”.
The guys are operating in a scene that is growing steady and seeing that more and more Progressive Metal from Colombia is coming in these days is something we highly encourage as we hardly ever get disappointed. Altered Symmetry is not letting us down either when bringing this release that opens quite timid but very well structured. The band slowly builds towards a climax into a song and then goes on with more power than you would have expected. Looking over their borders into different genres they often find themselves happy embracing little elements from that as well. The band never really meets a high tempo but sticks around in the slower songs having the stress on the more melancholic parts. Simply the parts where solo’s come in are most interesting because they don’t break a song but highlight it.
“Prologue” is a nice start for these guys. You could discuss the fact that could grow in strength here and there, but listening careful to the potential that this release offers we don’t need to spell that out to them, it will come naturally.

The cover of the album looks like something that was taken during the making of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy as the music is given with a wonderful and mind-blowing experiment. Combined with Metal and Story-complex songs, the band’s first debut album is something that you might want to take notice and pay full attention from the moment you hear this album from beginning, middle, and the end. Influences raging from Metallica, Dream Theater, Pantera, and the early days of Opeth, provides a huge resemblance in the city of Colombia.
Now I have a love of the Progressive Metal genre, no lie, but with Altered Symmetry, they certainly made a roller-coaster ride album with their debut, Prologue, as they take the music into a wonderous story into complex fairy-tales and a nightmare that will never end. Prologue could have been recorded as a soundtrack to the graphic novel, Batman Under the Red Hood and make it as a concept album, but with the stories influenced from Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens, it seems as if they have done their research so damn well.
From Long Lost Love, A Joker’s Vengeance, and Justified Crime, there’s a combination between James LaBrie meets James Hetfield meets Mikael Akerfeldt in their soft, loud, operatic, and growling voice that makes it sound like it was recorded in 1988. The guitar’s sound almost like virtuosity meets a thrashing sneer that gives it a huge volcanic rock format that you can hear in the album as well. Also on A Slave Without a Master, sounds like a vicious metallic crunch that provides a rumbling element of the Six Degrees of Turbulence-era.
There are some breathtaking moments in there and the eruption of the album adds to the atmosphere and gives it a mighty explosion and takes the machine going without any stop sign for them. A 7-minute fierce and energetic roadrunner epic, Lies and Fairy Tales comes off with a mighty bullet from the shotgun and has a touch of the running sections of the guitar, drums sounding like a machine gun that is going on without any stopping to shoot through the story structures. You have to admit there’s a bit of a mini metallic opera in there as if they were paying homage to Pete Townshend and Mike Portnoy as if they were watching them and giving them a huge pat on the back.
And by the time you listen to Prologue, you can’t just put it down, you might have a few listens to it and may have mixed opinions on their politics, whether you love or loathe it, it takes a good while to understand where the direction the band are going into. To put in more precise, if you admire Dream Theater and Metallica, you probably might want to check this album out and see where the trio are going for them, because the road for them, is just the beginning.
